According to Bennie Mohlabeng, Regional Commander of the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services, the block which apparently had been taken over by the homeless caught fire at approximately noon.
“At this stage we are not sure what the cause of the fire was but we’ve noticed that the block was inhabited by homeless people as it was filled with items that indicated that people were indeed living there,” Mohlabeng said.
He went on to say it is very common that abandoned houses and other buildings catch fire because vagrants start fires to try to keep themselves warm.
No injuries were reported.
