Photography, editing and film right up Bongani’s alley
Mohlakeng's aspiring professional photographer, filmmaker and editor never felt dejected when he couldn't study his passion formally.
Although he couldn’t study his true passion, 22-year-old Bongani Molefe is now a self-proclaimed professional photographer, filmmaker and editor.
The youngster said he taught himself the ins and outs of what he loves to do.
“I have always said to myself that no matter what, I know I take the best shot,” Bongani chuckled.
During an interview with the Herald, it was clear that editing skills and taking creative shots of various subjects are right up his alley.
“I started photography at an early age and I would choose my subjects randomly. I remember I used a Nokia Express, so it all started from there,” Bongani said.
He said after completing his Grade 12 at Thuto Lehakwe Secondary School in 2017, he didn’t have any means to study any further, which left him no choice but to look for a job.
I saved up a bit of and bought myself equipment. I first started with a Nikon camera, a printer and a backdrop banner. From there I got another camera and a tripod until I am where I am today.”
He added that he now needs lights for his makeshift studio.
Bongani said while there were many other career paths he could’ve chosen, he said he chose filming, not only to tell stories through the lens, but to capture moments of history.
“It’s really something that I can do all day without being impatient. I can work one element through the edit just to perfect one small thing.”
Bongani said while he may be as passionate as he is, he has also met certain challenges that put his patience to the test. He said thankfully, he’s extremely dedicated and passionate about doing what he loves.
I truly love the power of a camera lens. Everything you capture may be part of history. Even the next 100 years, generation after generation will have the joy to see what it was like in 2021 and I played a part. It is really amazing when you think about it … I can make history as an artist,” Bongani said.
