A granny with a special skill

For 60-year-old Magriet van der Hoven, it’s more than just knitting, it's pure joy!

The 60-year-old Magriet van der Hoven has mastered handcrafting, knitting and crocheting.

She said it is not only a talent but an activity that provides her comfort. Being at a frail stage in her life and growing older, Magriet said she likes doing what she does because it stimulates her creativity and keeps her going.

“I would encourage people to keep doing what they like because I believe that it will help them preserve their culture and help present the cultural diversity in society,” Magriet said.

Magriet creates items such as ornaments and decor, and she knits sweaters for adults and babies.

“I will never quit doing what I love,” she told the Herald. “This is something I take pleasure in.”

She said her mother taught her the basics from a very young age, and she has been able to enjoy it all her life. Later she augmented her skills by exploring crafting – something she has mastered since.

Depending on the intricacies of the objects that she makes, Magriet said one item can take from a day to a few weeks to complete.

“Some of the objects are really challenging and need your full focus. But, If you know the basics, then you can do it.

“Your signature or style must be unique, and one must avoid copying others, because it’s just like having a brand of your own,” Magriet said.

“I realised that if you can do something with your hands, you can do anything. It’s so therapeutic.

“Whatever I do, I make sure that I do it properly and as uniquely as I can, because whatever I put out is part of me,” Magriet said.
