Randfontein traffic cop operating speed cam arrested for asking R200 bribe

The Easter weekend saw two law-enforcement officers arrested for corruption. One of them is from Randfontein.

A 45-year-old traffic officer from Randfontein Public Safety was arrested for corruption during an Easter Sting Operation conducted by the Gauteng Police Anti-Corruption, Independent Police Investigate Directorate (IPID) and National Traffic Anti-Corruption Units.

According to Ndileka Cola, IPID national spokesperson, the officer was operating a speed camera on Friday, 2 April when he stopped an undercover vehicle and solicited a R200 bribe.

He was arrested on the spot for corruption and has been detained at the Randfontein Police Station,” said Ndileka.

She added that the Randfontein Anti-Corruption Unit will handle the case because the arrested law-enforcement officer is neither a member of the police nor Municipal Police Services (MPS), which means that it falls outside the mandate of IPID.

In another sting operation conducted on Monday, 5 April, a 56-year-old captain from Johannesburg Public Order Policing was also arrested for corruption in Observatory, Johannesburg.

Ndileka Cola stated that the captain, who was a Shift Commander, was arrested after he demanded a R100 bribe when he conducted an unauthorised roadblock with his members on Observatory Street and Steyn Street in Observatory, Johannesburg.

He stopped an undercover vehicle and demanded to see a driver’s licence, which the agent didn’t show, and he subsequently demanded cash. Entrapment cash was handed to him.”

The captain was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station, and is set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday, 6 April

According to Ndileka Cola, IPID is investigating this case.
