Another three suspected zama zamas’ bodies found

Three more bodies of suspected zama-zamas found at a construction site in Toekomsrus.

The bodies of another three suspected illegal miners were found at a construction site in Toekomsrus early on Wednesday morning, 5 May.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, said they received a complaint at about 8.30am regarding three bodies that were found at the construction site in Extension 4 in Toekomsrus. This brings the total of suspected zama zamas found dead in the area to six after three bodies were discovered in March.

We received information that the three men were digging underground when the rocks and sand collapsed on them. Friends of the illegal miners retrieved two bodies and left the third body in the hole,” Sergeant Hendricks said.

The Police K9 Search and Rescue were also called out.

Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS) declared the three men dead on scene.

“We searched for more possible bodies but nothing was recovered.”

An inquest docket was opened.
