Top typist retires from police

Former typist at the Randfontein Police said she played a much bigger role in the last three decades than just sitting at her desk typing.

Marlizan van Staden, 55, who has bowed out of her profession officially recently said there’s a tinge of sadness saying goodbye to her beloved job.

“I will definitely miss all my colleagues with whom I walked a long road in the Service; I will miss interacting with people and assisting them with their cases,” Marlizan said with pride.

She added she has learnt a great deal about people and many life lesson – compassion and empathy being at the top of the list.

“This job helped me to be a good listener; I gave it my all, although it wasn’t always smooth sailing,” she said.

She believes she gained the respect of many of her colleagues for remaining dedicated to working hard.

“I used to do a lot of things that were beyond my job description because I believe that one does not always have to stick to what is expected of you; you can do more to help, which in turn will help you – it’s part of personal development,” Marlizan said.

Throughout her career she always had a simple goal in mind – to serve and render a good service to the community.

Marlizan also thanked management and her colleagues for always appreciating her for her efforts; especially where she offered to help.

“If I worked overtime or over weekends, I would take the initiative and complete unfinished work for others, which has earned me a lot of praise.”

Her advice to the staff who will be taking over from those who have retired is to build good relations with others, and always go beyond the call of duty, especially for those making enquiries.

“Be proud of what you do and contribute to the police. Don’t see this as a job that needs to be done; with such an attitude you won’t soar to great heights.

“Believe in yourself and always try to assist your co-workers because I promise you, you’ll always go home fulfilled,” Marlizan advised.
