Top cop’s message after retirement

Lieutenant Colonel Elliot Mphostoli Mbele of the Randfontein Police said now that his days of protecting communities are over, it’s time to enjoy the fruits of his labour for many years to come.

Mbele, who has been in the Police Service for 35 years, said in an exclusive interview with the Herald many aspects of his profession had shaped him personally and professionally. He’ll hold those traits close to his heart for the rest of his days.

“Especially working as a team, the support we gave each other in the Service, and the spirit we had to uplift each other whenever we needed to, were truly amazing and character-building,” Mbele said.

He enjoyed amassing problem-solving skills; which he’ll cherish because it taught him a lot about the job, and about life itself, adding that he has enjoyed being in such a unique fraternity. Knowing that he was in a position to enforce the law has always fulfilled him.

Mbele said his job has taught him good conduct as a professional, to work independently, and never be a nuisance to others.

“By doing that, I earned myself the respect of many, and I have also shown that I was able to face up to any challenge.”

He said he had always enjoyed sharing his skills with his fellow officers; especially those who were new in the field – the rookies.

“I’ve encouraged teamwork and that they should complete their work on time; that they should do everything with passion; respect themselves and others; practice good morals; be considerate to others; and always lead by example.

“Most importantly, they should refrain from corruption, study for the self-development and love their work, and make sure that they serve those vulnerable from the depths of their hearts,” Mbele said.
