Bystander killed, cop injured in Friday morning CIT heist

Cash-in-transit robbery in the Randfontein CBD on Friday morning leaves cop injured and bystander dead.

A bystander was shot dead and a police officer wounded during a cash-in-transit robbery at Randfontein Station Mall in the CBD on Friday morning, August 27.

National Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili confirmed to the Herald that the unfortunate incident occurred at about 11:00.

She said an unknown number of thugs robbed a security guard at gunpoint when he went to load money at an ATM.

They targeted another security guard on their way out of the mall and as this was unfolding, two police officers who were entering the mall were also shot at.”

Colonel Muridili stated further that police returned fire, but one of the officers was shot in the leg.

“The robbers went on to shoot their way out, fatally wounding a bystander.”

She confirmed that the robbers fled the scene in two vehicles with an undisclosed amount of money.

The wounded police member was taken to hospital for medical attention.

The police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stop on 086 00 10111 or send tip-offs on the My SAPS app.
