Relief for motorists as fuel prices take a dip

Decreases in petrol, diesel, paraffin and LPG offer welcome relief for consumers and businesses this month, the South African Petroleum Retailers Association said.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed decreases in fuel prices, reflecting great relief for motorists and businesses this month.

In the statement issued by spokesperson Cathy Findley from the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA), the decrease in petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin and LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) prices will be effective from midnight on September 3.

The vice chairperson of SAPRA, Lebo Ramolahloane, added that the adjustment is perfectly timed since households and businesses have been under great strain.

“This decrease brings real relief. Diesel’s sharp drop is especially positive for transport, agriculture and logistics, which include sectors that carry the economy and directly impact consumer costs,” Ramolahloane said.

According to him, SAPRA noted July’s inflation reached 3.5%, the highest level in ten months, with food costs identified as the main driver. The association added that rising prices for essentials such as meat and vegetables continue to weigh heavily on consumers.

The fuel price adjustments are as follows:

Petrol – retail price
• 93 ULP (unleaded petrol) and LRP (lead replacement petrol): R0.04 c/litre decrease
• 95 ULP and LRP: R0.04 c/litre decrease

Diesel – wholesale price
• 0.05% Sulphur: R0.56 c/litre decrease
• 0.005% Sulphur: R0.57 c/litre decrease

Illuminating paraffin
• Wholesale: R0.37 c/litre decrease
• Single Maximum National Retail Price: R0.49 c/litre decrease

LPG
• Maximum retail price: R1.32 c/kg decrease

“Analysts warn that the relief might be temporary, and global geopolitical risks and volatile international markets could affect the decrease. We will continue to track developments closely to keep consumers informed,” concluded Ramolahloane.
