Another 98 arrests as police continue to clamp down on crime
Police and other stakeholders again joined forces to clamp down on crime in the West Rand District on March 2 making close to 100 arrests in the process.
Another operation Okae Molao held by police in the West Rand District continued to yield positive results with 98 suspects arrested on Thursday, March 2.

The operation was held in and around Randfontein and well supported by stakeholders including the Department of Community Safety and the Department of Home Affairs.
It was aimed at restoring the law and ensuring the safety of communities. This was done through roadblocks, crime prevention operations, vehicle checkpoints and raids.
During this time, seven people were arrested for murder, two for attempted murder, one for common robbery, one for housebreaking and theft, one for business burglary, five for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, eleven for theft, six for robberies, ten for common assault, thirteen for malicious damage to properties, two for dealing in drugs, three for possession of drugs, two for possession of dagga and three people were also arrested for the possession of drugs through a warrant of arrest.

This is in addition to three people being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for fraud, and four for being in contravention of a protection order.
Minor offenses such as intimidation and reckless and negligent driving were also policed, as well as 20 undocumented persons. A total of 17 traffic fines to the value of R16 500 were also handed out.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana said the main focus was on areas that were identified as crime hot spots and where illegal miners are commonly reported.
“Let us intensify our searches and arrest those who will be found in possession of car-jammers and house-breaking implements. Firearms are mostly utilised to terrorise our communities, we must go out there and recover those firearms,” said Kekana.

Parallel to the operation, the men and women in blue also conducted school searches at Randfontein Secondary School in Toekomsrus as well as AB Phokompe Secondary School in Mohlakeng where they addressed the issue of drugs, bullying, and misbehavior, in line with their school safety plan,
All arrested suspects will appear before the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
