Eight successes highlight Flying Squad’s ongoing crime battle
Officers seized drugs worth thousands, recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested suspects linked to a burglary during a two-week crime-fighting operation.
The West Rand Flying Squad (WRFS) recorded a series of crime-fighting successes across Gauteng between July 6 and 19, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs, a stolen vehicle and suspected housebreaking implements.
According to WRFS spokesperson Karen du Plessis, the unit recorded eight major successes during the two weeks.
The operation began on July 7 with three drug-related arrests in Benoni. In the first incident, officers arrested a suspect found in possession of 54 Mandrax tablets, eight grams of Cat and five cellphones suspected to be stolen, with the seized items valued at about R8 040.
A second suspect was arrested after police found 100g of crack cocaine, nine Mandrax tablets and eight grams of crystal meth, with an estimated street value of R15 802.
A third suspect was allegedly found in possession of 17g of crack cocaine and 47g of crystal meth, valued at about R16 323.
Later that day, WRFS members arrested another suspect at the Carletonville taxi rank after he was found with 130 Mandrax tablets, 41g of crack cocaine, 66g of crystal meth and 60 packets of nyaope. The drugs have an estimated street value of R36 394.
On July 10, officers recovered a stolen VW Polo Vivo valued at about R120 000 during an operation in Kagiso and arrested a suspect.
Two further arrests followed in Carletonville on the evening of July 14 after members acted on information received.
One suspect was arrested while allegedly transporting 455 bottles of cough medication worth about R18 200. Later that night, at about 22:41, another suspect was arrested after officers allegedly found two kilograms of cannabis with an estimated value of R8 000.
The latest arrests took place in Honeydew in the early hours of July 18, when three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected housebreaking implements.
Du Plessis said officers confiscated a steel bar, pick head, cellphones and a VW Polo Vivo, with the recovered items valued at about R60 000.
“The West Rand Flying Squad remains committed to combating crime and ensuring the safety of communities across Gauteng,” she said.
