Illegal miner arrested with explosive detonators

Police confirmed the arrest of a suspected illegal miner found with eight explosive detonators at Kloof No. 1 Shaft in Westonaria.

A suspected illegal miner was arrested after being found in possession of eight explosive detonators during a security operation at Kloof No. 1 Shaft in Westonaria on Tuesday, August 4.

According to South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, two security officers were patrolling underground on Level 25 of the mine when they spotted two individuals carrying a lamp in a non-operational section.

As the officers approached, both suspects fled. One was apprehended, while the second escaped.

Colonel Nevhuhulwi said the arrested suspect was unable to produce a valid clock card and it was established that he was allegedly an illegal miner.

A search of his bag led to the recovery of eight explosive detonators. He was arrested and is expected to face a charge of possession of explosive detonators.
