Be alert: Robberies near post office spark safety warning

Amid reports of criminal activity in the Randfontein CBD, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) is advising residents on safety measures and who to contact in an emergency.

The Randfontein CPF gave helpful tips to residents amid allegations of regular robberies taking place outside the post office.

Paul Diutlwileng, public relations officer for the CPF, explained they are aware of smash and grabs from vehicles and robberies late at night that take place outside the post office. He continued that they had campaigns to educate the community on patrol visibility, to lock their vehicles and keep their windows closed.

He noted the CPF has conventional patrollers, who are normal CPF patrollers responsible for reporting criminal activity to the police. They also have Siyebangena patrollers, which is a unit of the CPF focused on community safety. They patrol the entire CBD area and can be seen in blue jumpsuits and reflector vests.

To residents, Diutlwileng advised to be vigilant of their surroundings and keep their doors locked at all times.

When you see something suspicious, call the police or the CPF,” he says.

The numbers to call are the CPF patrol co-ordinator, Mkulu Sepotokela, on 072 716 1072, the police on 10111 or the police’s station relief commander on 071 675 7094, who will then dispatch a van.

Diutlwileng added that thefts often aren’t reported, but people in the community will speak up if they see something.

“We would like to thank the community for coming forward,” Diutlwileng said.

Sepotokela added that it is important for the community to report criminal activity so the CPF would know where the criminal hotspots are and they can know what to do. It is also important to make the police aware so they will be able to intervene.

Diutlwileng can also be contacted on 079 117 1084.
