79 suspects arrested in West Rand during Operation Shanela crackdown
A focused crime sweep in the West Rand has led to dozens of arrests, as police intensify efforts to clamp down on lawlessness in the region.
A total of 79 suspects were arrested in the West Rand during a high-impact crime crackdown led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, on Saturday evening, June 22.
The arrests formed part of Operation Shanela, a province-wide blitz conducted this past weekend, June 20-22, to tackle various criminal activities. Of the 79 arrests in the West Rand, more than 20 were for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police also conducted raids and roadblocks in the area, targeting illegal liquor outlets and tracking down wanted suspects.

Authorities say these integrated operations aim to disrupt criminal networks, reduce illegal firearm circulation, and increase police visibility in communities.
Some of the arrested suspects have been released on fines for minor offences, while others are expected to appear in local magistrates’ courts soon.
