Cable thief caught red-handed by CPF in Culemborg Park
Although only one suspect was caught, the incident highlighted the growing issue of infrastructure sabotage in the area and the challenges faced by community safety structures operating with limited resources.
A man believed to be involved in cable theft was caught red-handed early this morning, July 9, during a patrol in the Randfontein Bird Sanctuary – a protected area increasingly targeted by infrastructure criminals.
According to Ruan Sheppard, chairperson of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF), six suspects were spotted in the sanctuary in the early hours. While two hid behind trees, the remaining four were seen actively digging up cable.
CPF members managed to apprehend one of the suspects in a trench. He was detained on the scene and later arrested by police.

Sheppard praised the CPF patrollers and partner organisations who continue to show up – day and night – in the fight against crime.
“A special thanks to all who have partnered with the CPF in this ongoing battle,” he said. “We are a team, working with incredible partners, against a very real threat to our community.”
He also acknowledged the residents and donors who keep CPF operations going.
“To everyone who contributes financially, thank you. The CPF is a non-profit and relies entirely on community support. Without your help – and the support of the police – we simply wouldn’t be able to function,” Sheppard concluded.
