Greenhills targeted in latest attempted cable theft

The CPF was called to yet another scene where perpetrators attempted to steal power cables.

Another attempted cable theft incident occurred on North Way Road in the early hours of this morning, July 11.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Ruan Sheppard stated they received a message on the CPF group at 01:09 that cable theft started again on North Way Road.

“Next to the main gate in North Way is a trench going into the stadium. There is a cable supplying the mini substation that can be seen just a few metres ahead, in the direction of the trench. Someone left a tyre there for a marker to indicate the end of the trench at that time,” explained Sheppard.

Sub Rosa Integrated Security Solutions saw the perpetrators run away, one of them was nearly hit by their vehicle. Further along, they found a trench closer towards the substation inside the stadium.

Sheppard rushed to the scene after seeing the message at 02:45. Sub Rosa met with him and showed him where the digging took place. He stated they found another 5m trench was dug since, in almost two hours since the first sighting of the thieves.

Sheppard and Sub Rosa then went to the Randfontein Bird Sanctuary to check up on the cable that was replaced just yesterday, July 10, and would have been switched on today. They found a 15m trench with the cable fully exposed, and 2m of the cable had already been cut.

“With the damages already done, it felt like forever until sunrise,” concluded Sheppard.
