Gate motor theft surges in West Rand
Gate motor theft is on the rise in the West Rand, with homeowners urged to strengthen security to prevent break-ins.
Gate motor theft is becoming an increasing concern across Gauteng, with the West Rand among the areas most affected.
In the past week alone, multiple incidents of stolen gate motors have been reported in West Rand suburbs, as well as parts of Johannesburg, including Greenside.
According to Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT, criminals are targeting gate motors due to a thriving black market for parts. Stolen motors are either stripped for components such as batteries and gearboxes or sold as complete units to unsuspecting homeowners.
Hattingh warns that suspects often deactivate gate motors by switching them to manual override, allowing easy access to properties.
Tips to protect your gate motor and property include:
• Secure the motor in a locked steel casing
• Install anti-lift brackets on the gate
• Fit 180-degree beams to monitor the gate area
• Use an insurance-rated padlock
• Strengthen the gate rack with a welded flat bar
• Combine physical protection with electronic alerts such as sound bombs or GSM units
“Your electric gate is one of the first lines of defence. Early-warning systems linked to armed response can make it harder for criminals to succeed,” Hattingh said.
