West Rand to see SANDF support against illegal mining

Panyaza Lesufi says collaboration between the national government, law enforcement and municipalities will strengthen efforts to eliminate illegal mining across affected areas.

Amid growing concern among residents about illegal mining on the West Rand, the government has announced an intervention.

During President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address on February 12, he confirmed the deployment of members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to support police in the fight against illegal mining.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi described the intervention as decisive and necessary, saying it directly addresses the growing threat posed by illegal mining activities. He noted that such activities undermine the rule of law, endanger communities, damage critical infrastructure and negatively affect the provincial economy.

“Illegal mining has become a serious criminal enterprise that threatens the safety of our communities, exploits vulnerable people, and causes extensive environmental damage. The deployment of soldiers to assist the police demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring law and order and protecting communities,” Lesufi said.

He further highlighted that illegal mining has severe consequences, including violent crime, unsafe abandoned mining shafts and the intimidation of residents in affected areas.

He confirmed that the national government, law enforcement agencies and affected municipalities would work closely with the province to ensure the success of the initiative.

“The people of Gauteng deserve to live in safe communities free from criminality. We remain committed to doing everything possible, together with the national government, to eradicate illegal mining and its associated crimes,” he concluded.
