According to Kagiso Mogojane, the Mohlakeng Residents Committee chairperson, the outage began during the night, with many residents only realising the extent of the issue in the early hours of the morning. Homes, businesses, and essential services have since been affected, disrupting daily routines and raising safety concerns.

“Cables were stolen yesterday at the substation in Ext 11 that supplies Mohlakeng Ext 4, 5, 11 as well as the Zenzele area,” said Mogojane.

Residents had earlier in the week voiced their unhappiness during protest action that took place on Tuesday. They expressed anger over the ongoing issue of cable theft, which continues to plague communities across the region. They highlighted the impact on households, particularly food spoilage, inability to work from home, and concerns over security during dark hours.

At the time of reporting, electricity had not yet been restored and there has been growing concern over how long the outage will last.

Cable theft remains a major challenge in many parts of Gauteng, often resulting in prolonged outages and costly repairs. Residents in Mohlakeng are now hoping for urgent intervention to restore electricity and prevent further disruptions in the future.
