Operation Shanela 2 nets multiple arrests in weekend roadblock

A high-visibility roadblock led by Gauteng's top cop resulted in over 50 arrests, including drunk drivers and drug-related suspects, as police intensified efforts to curb crime in the West Rand.

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation under Operation Shanela 2 yielded significant results over the weekend, as police conducted a stop-and-search roadblock along Main Reef Road on Saturday night, June 6.

The operation was led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, and forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on crime and improve safety across the province.

During the roadblock, officers carried out thorough inspections of vehicles and individuals, resulting in the arrest of 24 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities have continued to stress the dangers of drunk driving, which remains a major contributor to road accidents and fatalities in the country.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, Gauteng Provincial spokesperson, stated that this operation was conducted through a collaborative effort involving the police, the Department of Home Affairs, traffic law enforcement agencies, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forums (CPFs), and private security companies.

The operation highlights the continued commitment of law enforcement agencies to address various forms of crime, including substance abuse, illegal immigration, and reckless driving.

Commissioner Mthombeni indicated that Operation Shanela 2 will continue across Gauteng, with similar high-visibility operations aimed at restoring law and order and ensuring safer communities.

Members of the public are encouraged to co-operate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities as authorities intensify efforts to combat crime.
