Inside Operation Shanela: How police are tackling crime across South Africa
Operation Shanela has become a powerful weapon in the SAPS’s fight against crime. Through co-ordinated raids, roadblocks and targeted arrests, the nationwide operation continues to clamp down on criminals and restore safety in communities across the country.
Operation Shanela is a nationwide, high-density crime-fighting initiative led by the police, aimed at aggressively tackling crime and improving safety in communities across the country.
Since its launch in 2023, the operation has become one of the country’s key strategies in combating serious and violent crime.

Operation Shanela is led at the provincial level by SAPS provincial commissioners and involves multiple law enforcement partners, including metro police, traffic authorities, Home Affairs officials and community policing structures.
In the Rand West, operations have already taken place this year in Bekkersdal and, most recently, over the past weekend in Randfontein and Mohlakeng.
At its core, Operation Shanela focuses on preventing, disrupting and responding to crime through co-ordinated actions such as:
• Roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints
• Stop-and-search operations
• High-visibility patrols, including foot patrols
• Tracing and arresting wanted suspects
• Raids on illegal businesses, such as liquor outlets and drug dens
• The confiscation of illegal firearms, drugs and contraband
These operations are intelligence-led, meaning police target specific hotspots and individuals linked to serious crimes.

Operation Shanela prioritises offences that have the greatest impact on communities, including violent crime, illegal firearms, drug-related crimes and gender-based violence. It also addresses immigration-related offences.
The operation has consistently delivered large-scale results, with weekly nationwide crackdowns often leading to thousands of arrests and the apprehension of suspects linked to serious crimes.
Ultimately, the initiative aims to restore public confidence in policing while reducing crime levels across South Africa.
By combining intelligence-led policing, high visibility and multi-agency co-operation, SAPS aims to remove dangerous criminals from the streets and create safer communities nationwide.
