Potholes so bad, Hectorton residents resort to using couch as warning sign.

At the corner of Twelfth and Village Street, motorists found an interesting sight as frustrated residents have taken an unusual approach to road safety.

Residents have put a couch in the pothole to help motorists avoid hitting it and severely damaging their vehicles.

Janet van der Merwe explained that the road on Twelfth Street was dug up early last year to install a water pipe. After the work was completed, the road was not repaired properly, which led to the formation of potholes.

Van der Merwe continued that motorists have to navigate around the potholes in a single file. Some residents even placed a couch in a pothole to warn motorists. The couch has since been run over.

People have to wait in line to pass. Besides that, it is just ugly, especially this section of the road,” said Van der Merwe.

She noted that people living along that road have to detour and use neighbouring streets to reach their houses.

“You have to choose your pothole,” she laughed.
