Sidewalk concerns at Bird Sanctuary
A resident shares his struggles with the lack of maintenance on the sidewalk in front of the Randfontein Bird Sanctuary.
Residents living near the Randfontein Bird Sanctuary have voiced growing concerns over neglected maintenance on the sidewalk, with fears for their safety and frustration over persistent flooding.
Percy Lean expressed alarm over the overgrown grass along the sidewalk in front of the bird sanctuary, which he believes has become a hiding spot for criminals.
There are elderly residents in the area, and we have already had four break-ins,” Lean explained.
Lean claimed he has repeatedly reported the issue to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), even visiting their offices in person.
“We feel it is our right to have maintenance done because we pay for it,” he insisted.

Beyond the uncut grass, Lean also highlighted a blocked main stormwater drain on the street, clogged with leaves and grass. According to him, this blockage has led to frequent flooding whenever it rains.
However, RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa offered a different perspective, suggesting that some residents may exaggerate the severity of the situation.
The grass is not as tall as reported, and maintenance is consistently carried out in that area,” Montshiwa stated.
He added that stormwater concerns reported by ward councillors are promptly addressed.
Despite this response, residents like Lean remain adamant that more proactive maintenance is needed to ensure their safety and protect their properties.
