Water leak concerns addressed: Municipality cites groundwater issues
Groundwater infiltration is behind ongoing leaks in Palm Avenue, says the municipality, not faulty meters. Residents are urged to save water.
Groundwater infiltration – not faulty infrastructure – was identified as the cause of persistent water meter leaks in Palm Avenue, amid ongoing water shortages.

This comes after residents raised concerns about leaking meters and wasted clean water, first reported by the Randfontein Herald on June 6 in an article titled Clean water runs nonstop despite water shortages.

In response, the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson, Phillip Montshiwa, confirmed in a statement on June 12 that an assessment had found natural groundwater seeping into the area around water meters, leading to the visible leaks.
We want to be clear that the water meters themselves are functioning correctly. The issue lies with the influx of groundwater,” said Montshiwa.
He assured residents that the municipality is actively monitoring the situation and has responded to all related inquiries.
“Every effort has been made to ensure that each inquiry is handled promptly, and the problem in question has been resolved,” he stated.

While efforts continue to manage the infiltration and mitigate its effects, Montshiwa urged residents to conserve water wherever possible.
Check for and repair any leaks promptly, avoid excessive lawn watering, and be mindful of water use during showers and daily tasks.”
The RWCLM said it will continue monitoring the situation and take necessary actions to protect water infrastructure in the area.
