Debate reignited over Riebeeck Lake’s future
The municipality invites proposals to revive Riebeeck Lake, sparking hope and mixed reactions from the community.
The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has invited members of the public to submit proposals to lease and manage Riebeeck Lake for nine years and 11 months, sparking renewed interest and debate about the lake’s future.
Former councillor and resident Oscar Oliphant recalled when Riebeeck Lake was a clean, safe, and popular family spot featuring facilities such as a lapa with braai areas, public toilets, and a train restaurant known for its top-class food. He supports leasing the lake to a private investor, emphasising the need for transparency and a longer lease period to attract serious investment.

Oliphant also hopes redevelopment will include restaurants, entertainment venues, outdoor spaces, small businesses, and even housing – benefiting both residents and property values.

Residents, however, remain divided.
Some, including Jakes Jacobs and Carel Grundlingh, lament the lake’s decline due to neglect and crime. Others, such as Johan Brits, believe funds should rather be used to improve infrastructure and attract business investment before focusing on the lake project.
