Sewage overflow worries Pelzvale farmers, residents

With sewage continuously overflowing, Pelzvale residents fear for their health and the future of their livelihoods.

Residents and farmers in Pelzvale say a persistent sewage overflow into a nearby swamp is threatening their health, water supply and livelihoods.

Resident Attie Wagner said they suspect malfunctioning pumps are causing the spill. Beyond the stench, he said the biggest concern is the contamination of their borehole water, which lies close to the surface. This, he added, also affects their crops and the cattle that drink the water.

Wagner said the problem began after Ext 11 in Mohlakeng was built, arguing that the ageing infrastructure cannot cope with the additional load.

Local farmer Ntlhalefeng Letsholo said he now has to test his crops for contamination before selling them.

“My livelihood comes from my vegetables. If they find my vegetables are contaminated, I won’t be able to sell my crops,” said Letsholo.

Mpho Cyril Mulaudzi, an environmental practitioner at the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), said the municipality will investigate the extent of the problem, assess the findings and submit a report.

RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said that while residents’ concerns are still assumptions, the matter will be thoroughly investigated.

“The sewer issue is a significant concern, and the municipality treats it with the utmost seriousness. When issues are brought to the attention of ward councillors, they are addressed promptly,” stated Montshiwa.

The municipality said an update will be provided once the investigation is complete.
