Residents urged to stay alert as floods threaten
As the rainy season begins, the municipality has shared helpful safety tips to prevent unnecessary tragedies during potential floods.
As heavy rains settle over the region, Rand West City Local Municipality has issued an urgent warning to residents, sharing critical safety tips to help prevent injuries, loss of life and damage during the rainy season.
Municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa explained that it is important for the community to monitor weather alerts in the media.
He noted that residents should consider whether they live in low-lying areas, as these can be affected by sudden flooding. To prevent major damage, he encouraged residents to keep an eye on rising water levels and evacuate if necessary.
If flooding does occur, it is important to avoid contact with the water, as it may be contaminated or connected to live electricity.
Montshiwa also advised residents to avoid low bridges and bodies of water, and motorists must not attempt to drive through flooded areas.
For those moving on foot, he warned that floods can be extremely dangerous and urged people to avoid walking through moving water. Even water that is only 15cm deep can sweep a person off their feet.
“Be wary at night when it is especially difficult to see hazards on the road,” he added.
To protect important documents, he recommended storing them in water-resistant containers.
Montshiwa further urged parents to teach their children about the dangers of flooding to help prevent future tragedies.
He advised that anyone who finds themselves in danger should contact emergency numbers: 112, 10177 or 107.
