Housing subsidy drive begins as December allocations pause
Housing subsidy applications are now open, but RDP housing allocations are paused until the new year.
Rand West City Local Municipality has opened applications for housing subsidies, with phase one already completed. However, allocations for RDP housing have been temporarily paused for the remainder of the year.
Applications for housing subsidies
In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, the municipality launched applications under the Affri-Droogeheuwel Mega Project. According to municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, the first phase began on November 27, assisting residents from wards 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9.
Montshiwa assured that the remaining wards will be assisted in the upcoming phases, with a rollout schedule to be shared soon.
“Only residents registered on the National Housing Needs Register will be assisted,” he noted.
Residents with enquiries are encouraged to visit the Randfontein and Westonaria Human Settlements offices from Monday to Wednesday. New registrations for the National Housing Needs Register are processed on Thursdays and Fridays.
“We urge all eligible residents to make use of this opportunity,” Montshiwa said.
Pause on allocations for December
Montshiwa explained that allocations are on hold due to the year-end construction industry shutdown, limited availability of water meters and outstanding responsibilities from housing developers.
“The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements will continue working with the municipality to assess project readiness,” he stated.
An update on allocations is expected in late January next year once intergovernmental planning has been finalised.
