Hope for a children’s park in Toekies

In an effort to make Toekomsrus a better place, the community came together to turn a local park into a safer space for children.

The Toekomsrus community once again joined hands to clean a local park, hoping to make it more accessible and safe for children in the area.

Community member Koekie Allie explained that although trees and plants were planted in the small park, it has not been properly maintained. She added that the park currently has no play equipment for children, no grass and no seating areas.

As part of the clean-up effort, community members cut back overgrown trees and plants. They hope that the space will grow and eventually be transformed into a proper playground for children, and that it may even be given an official name. However, she noted that there is still a lot of work to be done.

“Toekomsrus is being neglected in many ways. I can’t even say we have a park to be proud of. Everything is being destroyed by drugs,” Allie expressed.

She also raised concerns about illegal dumping in the area.

“We ask the community of Toekomsrus to help us keep our area clean. It is our own community members who are careless towards others. Dumping rubbish in front of someone else’s yard shows that we do not care for one another. We must think about the next person’s health,” she said.

Allie added that stricter laws or fines for illegal dumping could help curb the problem.
