Dan Tloome residents struggle with unresolved service failures

Residents of the Dan Tloome Mega City Project say unresolved plumbing and electricity problems are posing serious health and safety risks.

Since September last year, residents of the Dan Tloome Mega City Project have been struggling with ongoing housing-related issues.

Resident Connie Smuts explained that one of the major concerns involves broken and blocked drains, which were reported as far back as last year but remain unresolved. She said the drains frequently overflow, causing sewage to leak onto the ground.

“It is a health risk, as many residents already have health problems. There are also children and babies living here who are at risk,” said Smuts.

She added that plumbing issues inside the houses are also a concern, with leaking water pipes allowing moisture to penetrate the walls.

“It affects the walls of the houses and can cause cracks. These cracks could eventually lead to parts of the structure collapsing, leaving us without a roof,” Smuts explained.

In addition, residents are experiencing electricity problems. Smuts said the houses rely on solar panels, but faulty wiring has left many residents without power.

She explained that she suffers from asthma and relies on a ventilator to assist with her breathing. Due to the electricity issues, the machine recently malfunctioned and was damaged.

“I cannot afford to buy a new one, so I am forced to use a fan to help with my breathing,” she said.

Smuts added that the lack of electricity has also left her unable to use essential household appliances such as a fridge, washing machine and television.

“Without a fridge, we cannot buy meat, milk or any other perishable food,” she said.
