Eskom engages Bekkersdal residents in awareness campaign

Eskom officials discussed smart meters, transformer upgrades, outages and rising electricity costs during a Winter Awareness Campaign aimed at promoting efficient energy use.

Eskom officials hosted a Winter Awareness Campaign in Bekkersdal on June 17, engaging residents on key electricity-related matters affecting the community.

The campaign focused on educating the public about the implementation and benefits of smart meters, which are aimed at improving billing accuracy and helping households better manage their electricity consumption.

Officials also addressed ongoing infrastructure improvements, including the replacement of ageing transformers to enhance reliability and reduce the risk of outages. Residents were given insight into both planned and unplanned power outages, with Eskom explaining the causes and the importance of maintenance work to ensure long-term stability of the electricity supply.

Another critical topic discussed was the recent electricity price increase, with officials outlining the reasons behind the adjustments and encouraging residents to use electricity efficiently, especially during the high-demand winter season.

The session provided a platform for community members to ask questions and raise concerns, fostering open communication between Eskom and residents.

Regarding the electricity tariff increase, Rand West City Local Municipality spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said that residents who struggle or cannot afford the tariff increase are encouraged to apply for the indigent subsidy. The increases are expected to take effect from July 1. The tariff is set to increase by 9.01%.

The campaign forms part of Eskom’s broader efforts to keep communities informed, promote responsible energy usage, and improve service delivery during the colder months when electricity demand is at its peak.
