Municipality warns of scammers posing as municipal licensing officials

Rand West City Local Municipality has issued a warning to residents and motorists following reports of scammers impersonating licensing officials and attempting to solicit cash payments.

Residents and motorists within Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) are being urged to remain vigilant following reports of individuals falsely posing as municipal licensing officials.

These individuals allegedly approach residents and motorists under the pretence of offering licensing-related services, often demanding cash payments.

Phillip Montshiwa, spokesperson for RWCLM, cautioned that “It has come to the municipality’s attention that scammers are approaching members of the public, claiming to represent the Licensing Department and offering services in exchange for cash payments.” He said these services include vehicle licence renewals, settlement of fines, booking of driving licence tests, and the issuing of driving licences.

RWCLM has strongly warned the public not to make any payments to such individuals, emphasising that legitimate municipal officials do not request cash transactions or operate in this manner.

Residents are encouraged to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a municipal official before engaging with them.

Motorists, in particular, have been warned to be cautious when approached in public spaces or roadside situations, as scammers may attempt to exploit urgency or confusion to solicit money.

The municipality has called on the community to report any suspicious behaviour to the South African Police Service (SAPS) or relevant municipal authorities.
