Local NPO attend Heritage Day celebrations in Pretoria
Scores of people from different parts of the province convened to celebrate the day in style.
Members of the Olerato Youth Development non-profit organisation were out and about on Heritage Day and experienced a massive carnival at the Union Buildings in Pretoria in Tshwane.
The group consisted of Skeleton dancers, Amapiano dancers, Sotho cultural dancers and Tswana cultural dances, but they did not get the opportunity to take to the stage and perform for the crowd owing to the nature of the programme.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was also there and delivered the keynote address on September 24 when scores of people from different parts of the province convened to celebrate the day in style.
Nokuthula Radebe, founder of Olerato Youth Development non-profit company said they all had a wonderful day at the Gauteng Heritage Day celebrations.
Most of the children in our organisation were keen to embark on that adventure.
“The whole purpose of our trip was to encourage them to step outside of their own cultural bubble and learn about, grow, explore and experience the vibrant and diverse range of cultures within our glorious rainbow nation.
“It was also aimed at allowing them to understand, appreciate, recognise and respect each other’s culture and everything it embodies,” said Radebe who added that they funded the trip from their own pockets. The parents contributed R20 per child for them to attend the Gauteng Heritage Day carnival.
Radebe said although they did not perform for the crowd, that did not deter them, and added that they would take part in such events again in the future.
