West Rand spelling bees spread their wings in Hillside
The annual Spelling Bee Whizz and Dictionary Competition improved vocabulary and instilled the culture of reading.
The Thandeka Knowledge Hub hosted its second annual Spelling Bee Whizz and Dictionary Competition and awarded the champions.
The hub hosted its first competition in 2023 and according to founder Thandeka Legae, the competition was a success, again.
Learners in grades three to 12 from the West Rand were invited to showcase their spelling skills. The participants were referred to as Whizzers and were divided into four categories according to their grades.
Thandeka confirmed 23 Whizzers registered to participate, most being grades six to seven learners. They were given words to practice before the day of the competition and the grades eight to 12 Whizzers were also given a Dictionary Quiz and a Word Ruffle Quiz.
“All Whizzers participated with interest and enthusiasm as they showcased their skills with words and whizzed their way through all the rounds until the final round where the best Whizzer was chosen,” she expressed.
The Grade Three category winner was Bonang Israel Legodi while Thandolwethu Sibiya managed to claim first place in the Grade Four to Five category. Thabani Moyo took first place on the podium as the grades six to seven winner and Asenathi Nondule won in the grades eight to 12 category.
According to Thandeka, the event aimed to instil the culture of reading, to allow the Whizzers to improve their vocabulary and gain confidence on stage.
“We would like to thank Daniel Den, Pick n Pay Club and Maskew Miller Learning for sponsoring this event. A big thank you to the parents and educators who registered the Whizzers. Another big thank you to the Whizzers for a great display of enthusiasm by reading all those words,” she concluded.
