Shot fired during robbery at RandWest SPCA
The RandWest SPCA is in desperate need of a security upgrade after Wednesday's robbery where three employees were targeted.
Three RandWest SPCA employees were robbed on Wednesday morning, October 23.
Brenda Eloff, chairperson of RandWest SPCA, confirmed the robbery occurred just before 08:00.
Four robbers approached staff near the small gate by the drop-off kennels, taking two cellphones and the receptionist’s handbag, which was later dropped as they fled.
Two of the robbers were armed, and one fired a shot into the ground. SPCA manager René van Straten heard the shot and triggered the alarm, causing the robbers to flee. No police case has been opened yet, but Mapogo A Mathamaga responded and searched for the suspects.
Eloff added that they now need community support to enhance security, as two security cameras and a gate motor need replacing, along with repairs to door magnets. The stolen cellphones, used for work, also need to be replaced.
“Our receptionist will be off for the next seven days, and the two kennel workers, while at work, will receive counselling,” Eloff said.
