Road safety is everybody’s responsibility – Gauteng Traffic Police
Motorists were urged to take charge of their safety and the safety of other road users during a heightened Road Safety Campaign in Mohlakeng.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, as well as the Gauteng Traffic Police, held a heightened Road Safety Campaign in Mohlakeng recently.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa explained that since February is road safety month, they reached out to the community to educate them.
On February 27, they started by educating people on scholar patrol and monitoring. The second segment included learner transport and public transport, where they talked to drivers about roadworthiness and vehicle compliance, such as documentation. The third segment included a child in traffic presentation where they educated junior pedestrians about safe usage of the road. They taught them about safe usage of the road and not to play in the road, visibility as well as the colours of traffic lights.
During the fourth segment, they visited the Bundu Inn informal settlement, where they went door-to-door to deliver safety messages to residents. Sibasa noted that in informal settlements next to a busy road, many residents are killed by vehicles, either from drinking and walking, drinking and driving or speeding. He mentioned they were also made aware the area needs more law enforcement as residents explained there are illegal mining activities in the area. He stated the issue has been escalated to the police. They further encouraged residents to report gender-based violence cases.
“We would like to encourage all categories of road users to adhere to the rules of the road. We are appealing to the community to come together and work with us in ensuring the province is a safe province. People must take charge of their safety and the safety of other road users. Road safety is everybody’s responsibility,” stated Sibasa.
