Human rights activist speaks
Let us work together to create a world where all individuals can live with dignity and respect, and where human rights are promoted and protected for all – Human rights activist.

As millions of people commemorate Human Rights Day, activist Mamello Segale reminds the community of the fundamental importance of promoting and protecting the dignity and rights of all individuals.
“This day serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made in advancing human rights while also acknowledging the persisting challenges and injustices that require our continued attention and activism,” Mamello said.
As an activist, she is committed to the pursuit of human rights and social justice. She firmly believes human rights are universal, inalienable and interdependent.
It is not a gift from the state but an inherent part of our humanity.
“It is our collective responsibility to promote and protect these rights, not only for ourselves, but for all individuals; regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or disability,” she expressed.
She added despite the progress made in advancing human rights, residents continue to face numerous challenges.
“Marginalised communities, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and others, continue to face systemic injustices and human rights violations. We have to amplify their voices and struggles, and demand accountability from governments, institutions, and individuals who perpetrate these injustices.
“As we reflect on the state of human rights, it is clear that activism and advocacy are more crucial than ever. We must continue to push for policies and practices that promote and protect human rights. We must hold those in power accountable for their actions.
We must also celebrate and support human rights defenders around the world, who risk their lives and livelihoods to promote and protect human rights,” she said.
She advised on how community members can promote and protect human rights.
“First, we must educate ourselves and others about human rights and social justice. We must also demand accountability from our leaders and institutions, and support policies and practices that promote and protect human rights. Finally, we must continue to amplify the voices and struggles of marginalised communities and work towards creating a more just and equitable world for all,” she explained.
“As we commemorate Human Rights Day, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of human rights and social justice. Let us work together to create a world where all individuals can live with dignity and respect, and where human rights are promoted and protected for all.”
