Brenda Eloff, chairperson for the SPCA, explained the inspiration behind the campaign was to get more people involved with the SPCA. They currently only have four committee members and are in dire need of help.

SPCA manager René van Straten expressed their hope that with the clean-up campaign, people would come to the SPCA and see what they do.

Brenda added not one of the current committee members resides in Randfontein and all have other jobs they need to do as well. She noted they are also understaffed, which means the staff cannot get to the maintenance issues, as they also have another important job to do which is to save animals.

René added the maintenance work that needs attending to includes taps, lights, wires and cleaning up.

This is not the image we want to put out, it seems as though we are not in control,” she said.

Brenda continued that the maintenance work that stays behind is causing a snowball effect. The damages worsen with time and other maintenance issues arise, prompting them to spend even more money, which they don’t have.

“It is more expensive in the long run. The costs are more and we will never have the funds to stay ahead. It puts more pressure on the staff and takes the focus as well as time away from their actual work,” she stated.

René mentioned that, unfortunately, the clean-up was not a success, however there was progress. She thanked the volunteers who came to help and was proud to announce they have one new committee member.

We appreciate your help a lot, without it we wouldn’t be able to do the work we do. We are pleading with the community, we need your help,” Brenda said.

Any person who would like to help can contact the SPCA on 011 412 3114.
