Mohlakeng lights up in support of GBV victims

To help raise awareness against GBV and inspired by #JusticeForCwecwe, concerned community members held a candlelight ceremony in Mohlakeng.

The Seventh Day Adventist Students Association (SDASA), together with various stakeholders, embarked on a two-day campaign against gender-based violence and child abuse.

The campaign was inspired by the #JusticeForCwecwe national outcry after a seven-year-old girl from Matatiele in the Eastern Caps was sexually abused. A candlelight ceremony was held on April 6, attended by concerned community members, including GBV activists Mandisa Khuse and Bafedile Shenxane.

The following day, a march was undertaken from the Mohlakeng Four Square Taxi rank to the Gauteng West Education Department’s offices, where a memorandum was handed over to David Manwane by Lwazi Dlamini.

Manwane committed himself to the memorandum and promised to escalate it to the highest offices in Krugersdorp. The campaign received support from Ward 22 councillor Pelesile Faku, who was also in attendance at the candlelight ceremony, as well as West Rand District Municipality council speaker Bethuel Munyai.
