Dog run over, friend found at his side
A dog was tragically run over and killed, while another dog, believed to be his companion, was found sitting beside him and has since been rescued.
No More Tears Animal Rescue recently received a distressed call that two dogs were seen on the R559. One had already been killed by a car, and his friend was sitting next to his lifeless body.

Clarisse Kruger, a volunteer at No More Tears, explained that the location where the dogs were was dangerous. They couldn’t stop the vehicle, and many assumed the dogs had already been removed. However, on May 27, the surviving dog was still sitting in the veld next to his friend, refusing to leave him.
No More Tears rushed out to help him, but he was frightened, and they couldn’t reach him. Stephan Hendricks, one of the directors of No More Tears, left food out hoping he would return.
Thirty minutes later, Stephan returned, and there the dog was, still loyally by his friend’s side. However, the moment Stephan approached, he bolted, heartbroken and confused.
“We realised a trap wouldn’t work and we didn’t have time. This boy needed help, fast. That’s when we called our trusted vet, Dr Johan Naude from Randfontein Diere Hospitaal,” Clarisse explained.
The plan was to dart him and get him to safety. They lost him a few times as the dog was too scared to go near them, luckily, he ran right past Johan at one point, and he was able to safely dart him.
“He’s no puppy, he’s an older boy, exhausted and grieving. His friend has been respectfully buried. But the surviving dog needs care, and that comes with a cost,” Clarisse continued.
She stated he is currently still at the vet, where he is being treated and sterilised. They don’t know where the two dogs came from, but they suspect they were dumped.
People who drove past him said that he was very confused and disoriented and didn’t know where he was. He ran up and down, and then he would go sit down next to his friend, who had already been run over.”
Border Collie Rescue SA will be taking him in, they will rehabilitate him before finding him a forever home. The dog has been given the name Spore by Dr Naude and his team.
