Community’s help needed to feed over 300 furry friends

With expenses more than three times their income, Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary is urgently appealing to the community for support to care for the animals they rescue.

Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary is urgently appealing to the community for donations of food, as their animals are in dire need.

Louisa Rossouw, founder of the sanctuary, explained they use 40kg dog pellets per day, which amounts to 280kg per week and 1 120kg per month. For their cats, they use 12kg pellets per day, which adds up to 84kg per week and 336kg per month.

She continued, their intakes vary from month to month, but currently they have about 115 dogs in their care and around 216 cats.

Also at the top of their needs are soft food for small dogs and puppies, cats and kittens. They also need cleaning products, blankets and toys for the fur-babies.

Louisa explained their total expenses monthly amounts to roughly R100 000, including salaries, food and cleaning products, as well as electricity and water and vet bills. Their income from donations roughly amounts to R30 000 monthly. Louisa added that half of her salary goes directly to her workers’ salaries, and her husband then supports her throughout the month.

“Finances are a permanent problem. Please help with food donations for our animals. If we cannot better our finances in a year, we would really have to start thinking about closing our doors permanently,” she concluded.
