Bekkersdal community steps up for wellness

A 4km health awareness walk in Bekkersdal promoted fitness and encouraged residents to screen for chronic illnesses.

The congregation of St Mary Anglican Church, together with local residents, took part in a 4km health awareness walk to test their fitness and encourage early screening for common illnesses.

The church’s priest, Reverend Seipati Khomane, joined the walk from the township’s entrance to the church premises, raising awareness for those battling health challenges.

Seipati explained that the church adopted Health Awareness Month for October, coinciding with St Luke’s Day on October 18. In the Bible, St Luke was both a disciple and a medical doctor.

“When I arrived in Bekkersdal early this year, I witnessed many funerals due to illnesses that could have been prevented. Although the church plays a role in spiritual guidance, there also has to be physical intervention. That is why we saw it fit to embark on these health and wellness campaigns,” she said.

Throughout October, the church hosted health talks by professionals on topics such as dementia, paediatrics, foetal alcohol syndrome, and breast cancer awareness. Speakers included Sister Mpumi Jali, Dr Kgomotso Makgotle, Dr Matsela Pheko, and Sister Lebogang Thatloa.

“This was a huge success as we partnered with stakeholders such as the Westonaria Sub-District Health Department and the West Rand Health Department, who set up stations where the community could test for various chronic illnesses such as blood pressure, HIV/ Aids, diabetes and eye health,” said organiser Gomolemo Mogole.

Resident Morelebone Thina added, “It was so exciting to walk with our leader, Seipati, and some of the elderly who are already in their 70s.”
