New Smart Driver’s Licensing Centre opens in Randfontein

The new Smart Driver's Licensing Centre in Mohlakeng offers residents faster, more convenient access to licensing services while creating local job opportunities.

After years of travelling to neighbouring towns or the CBD for basic licensing services, Randfontein residents can now renew and apply for licences closer to home following the opening of the modernised Umphakathi Mall Smart Driver’s Licensing Centre (DLTC) on February 5.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela officiated at the launch in Rand West City, describing the facility as a step towards faster, more professional and more accessible public services. The centre offers the full range of licensing services, including learner and driver’s licence applications, renewals and temporary licences, all within a streamlined, modern setting designed to reduce long queues and delays.

Beyond improved service delivery, the MEC highlighted the local economic impact of the centre, noting that all staff members employed there are from the Randfontein community. She urged residents to take collective responsibility for protecting the facility and warned against corruption that could undermine its operations.

The project forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s broader drive to bring essential services closer to townships and informal settlements.

For residents such as Mohlakeng’s Antonio Ndimande, the benefits are immediate.

“I don’t have to travel to the CBD or other neighbouring areas to do any renewals,” he said.

While welcoming the initiative, councillor Jeanette Nyameni also used the occasion to call on the department to address ongoing concerns about potholes in the area.

The Smart DLTC will operate from Monday to Saturday, with officials expecting it to ease service bottlenecks and improve road safety.
