Community mourns Ashley Scheepers following tragic death

Family confirms identification of 21-year-old’s body found in disused mine shaft.

Ashley Scheepers, 21, was remembered by family, friends and community members at a memorial service in Toekomsrus on Thursday, February 26, after his decomposed body was discovered earlier this month.

Scheepers and a 17-year-old friend were reported missing on February 15 and were believed to have been abducted. His remains were later recovered from a disused mine shaft known for illegal mining activity. The family confirmed they identified the body on Thursday.

The memorial service, held at Genesis House of Prayer, drew a large crowd, with mourners reflecting on Scheepers’ kindness, humour and close relationship with his family.

Pastor Randy Williams, his uncle, and Pastor Francis Williams offered prayers and support to his grieving siblings, particularly his younger brothers. Family members were visibly distraught, and his sister was unable to deliver a eulogy.

Unverified reports allege that Scheepers may have been thrown into the mine shaft.

The tragedy has prompted renewed calls from the community for greater police visibility and faster response times, amid ongoing safety concerns in the area.

The investigation follows an earlier report that a decomposed body was found at a dumping site in Randfontein on February 25. DNA samples have been collected to confirm the identity of the deceased.

Community members and authorities continue to seek answers as investigations continue.
