Unidentified body discovered amid missing person probe

Authorities are investigating after human remains were located at a local waste area, with forensic testing underway to establish identity and possible links to earlier reports.

Police have opened an inquest after a decomposed body of a man was discovered at a dumping site in Randfontein early today, February 25.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the body remains unidentified.

“It cannot be confirmed whether the body is related to the missing person or the kidnapping cases. DNA samples have been collected and sent for analysis,” Sibeko said.

A missing person enquiry was opened at Mohlakeng Police Station, while a kidnapping case was registered at Randfontein Police Station on February 15.

It is unclear how long the body had been at the site. Police have not released the identity of the deceased pending further investigation and notification of next of kin. Authorities also could not confirm whether the body is that of the missing person whose image has been circulating on social media.

Investigations are ongoing.
