Spartans make their mark nationally
A standout season of medals, milestones and international exposure has cemented Spartans Karate Club as one of the country’s rising martial arts forces.
The Spartans Karate Club, based at Glenharvie Combined School, has established itself as a national powerhouse, celebrating record-breaking achievements at regional, national and international levels.
According to Spartans public relations officer, Martin Venter, the elite team, led by dedicated coach Enzo Pillay, with the club under the leadership of Shihan Kruben Pillay, kicked off the year with an outstanding performance at the Gauteng Provincial Championships in Johannesburg in February. The team secured 16 gold, 20 silver and 6 bronze medals, along with 11 fifth-place finishes. Their performance played a key role in helping the West Rand Karate Federation secure the provincial title.

The dojo then gained valuable international experience at the WKF Youth League in Zimbabwe from March 26 to 28, competing against more than 150 athletes from 31 countries. Although they did not secure any medals, the experience proved invaluable.
Back home, both the senior and development teams excelled at the South African Senior and Development Nationals in Pretoria in late February. This momentum continued at the Junior Nationals in Durban from March 20 to 22, where they earned six gold, four silver and 15 bronze medals.
They also achieved eight fifth-place finishes, three seventh-place finishes and nine Top 16 positions. This marked the dojo’s best performance at the nationals to date. A total of 36 athletes and two coaches were awarded Gauteng provincial colours for representing the province at the National Championships.

Currently, 15 members have been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming UFAK African South Competition in Angola.
Among the club’s top performers:
• Melusi Masango (15) earned a silver medal at his first-ever elite national championships.
• Sihle Selamolela (16) excelled at the Junior Nationals in Durban, winning a team kata bronze medal and an individual bronze medal in kumite.
After many years of training, this marked his first podium finish at nationals, highlighting the value of persistence and dedication.
With a strong culture of excellence, Spartans Karate Club continues to elevate Westonaria’s sporting profile.
“This is more than just sport, it’s a movement. We are building champions both on and off the mat,” concluded Sensei Pillay.
