Mismanagement blamed for eight-year community health centre delay

Years of delays and contractor-related mismanagement have stalled progress on the Randfontein Community Health Centre project.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, conducted an oversight visit to the delayed Randfontein Community Health Centre project in Mohlakeng, where financial mismanagement by a contractor has stalled construction for years.

The project, which began in 2018, was halted after the initially appointed contractor encountered financial management challenges, ultimately leading to the termination of the contract and a suspension of work.

During the visit, Mazibuko met with project managers and contractors to assess the current state of the site and receive updates on efforts to get construction back on track.

The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that processes are underway to appoint a new contractor so work can resume and the facility can be completed.

The prolonged delays underscore the need for stricter financial vetting of contractors, improved accountability, and more effective project management. A facility intended to expand access to essential healthcare has instead remained incomplete, leaving the community without the services it was meant to provide.
