Stephen Maila takes the helm at RandWest SPCA
The RandWest SPCA has appointed Stephen Maila as its new manager, who brings 22 years of experience and outlines a renewed focus on animal welfare and community support.
The RandWest SPCA has entered a new chapter with the appointment of a new manager who brings more than two decades of experience in animal welfare and a renewed focus on community involvement.
Stephen Maila has stepped into the role with 22 years of experience dedicated to the protection and care of animals. He began his career as a volunteer, driven by a passion for animal welfare, before progressing through various roles in the sector.
Maila said his core focus is to ensure that every animal’s circumstances improve from the moment it arrives at the SPCA.

“Whether an animal arrives neglected, abandoned, injured, or afraid, it deserves care, dignity, safety, and love,” he said. He added that the RandWest SPCA is more than just a workplace, describing it as a calling to improve animal lives while also supporting surrounding communities.
He emphasised that the organisation’s work depends heavily on public support and urged residents to play an active role in animal welfare. This includes adopting rather than buying pets, reporting cruelty or neglect, sterilising animals and promoting responsible pet ownership.
Maila also highlighted the importance of small contributions, saying even actions such as sharing SPCA social media posts can help raise awareness.
Financial support, he added, remains critical to sustaining operations. Donations assist with essential needs such as food, veterinary care and fuel for inspectors responding to cruelty complaints and conducting inspections. Community members can contribute through once-off donations, monthly debit orders from as little as R100, fundraising initiatives or kennel sponsorships.

“Every animal that comes through our doors depends not only on the dedication of our staff and inspectors, but also on the compassion and involvement of the public,” he said.
Maila encouraged the Rand West community to stand together in supporting vulnerable animals, saying that every contribution – whether through adoption, volunteering, donations or awareness – makes a meaningful difference.
With his extensive experience and clear focus, Maila aims to strengthen the RandWest SPCA’s work in protecting and caring for animals across the region.
