Winter crime concerns prompt safety warning from security company

From home security systems to outdoor exercise routines, experts say small precautions can make a major difference during the darker winter months.

Fidelity Services Group is urging residents to strengthen their home and personal safety measures as winter approaches, warning that shorter days and earlier sunsets can increase security risks.

With less daylight available, daily activities such as commuting, arriving home, or exercising often take place in low-light conditions. This creates more opportunities for criminal activity, making it important for residents to reassess both their home security measures and personal safety habits.

According to the group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity, Charnel Hattingh, winter conditions can directly affect security and awareness.

“Winter is not just about colder temperatures; it’s a change in environment that directly impacts security,” said Hattingh.

Prepare your home for winter

Hattingh encouraged residents to ensure their security systems are fully operational ahead of winter.

She advised homeowners to test alarm systems and panic buttons regularly to confirm signals are received by monitoring centres. Electric fencing should also be inspected, as colder weather can affect tension and potentially trigger false alarms.

Residents are further encouraged to ensure backup power solutions are in place to maintain security during outages, while outdoor lighting, beams, and sensors should be checked to confirm they are working correctly.

Hattingh also recommended arming external beams earlier in the evening, once everyone is home and remaining alert when arriving at or leaving home in the dark.

“A system that isn’t functioning properly is as good as having no system at all,” Hattingh added.

“Regular testing and maintenance can make all the difference in an emergency.”

Outdoor exercise safety

Seasonal changes can also affect people who walk, run, or cycle outdoors, particularly during the darker early morning and late afternoon hours when many prefer to exercise.

To improve personal safety while exercising outdoors this winter, residents are advised to choose well-lit and busy routes while avoiding isolated areas. Exercising with a partner or group is also encouraged where possible.

Other safety precautions include wearing reflective clothing to remain visible to motorists, varying exercise routines to avoid predictability, and avoiding headphones that may reduce awareness of surroundings.

Hattingh also recommended carrying a fully charged cellphone or a panic device while informing a trusted contact about planned routes and expected return times.

“Security needs evolve with the seasons. By taking proactive steps at home and on the move, you can ensure you and your loved ones remain safe during the darker months,” concluded Hattingh.
