Leano leads by example
Randfontein High School's RCL President is excited to represent her fellow learners as the newly elected District RCL President.
Leano Sejoe, the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) president at Randfontein High School (RHS), has now been elected the District RCL President.
Njabulo Mkize, her teacher liaison officer explained all the presidents from different schools in the district were invited to form the District RCL and out of those learners the top six were chosen as the Executive RCL, with Leano chosen as president.
Even though she is still waiting to hear what her duties will include, she is already excited to start making a difference. She is also aiming for the provincial RCL position where she will be able to communicate with political figures regarding the needs of learners.
“I’ve realised not all learners have the same resources we have at our school. I hope to use my position to help learners from other schools to have the same resources we do,” said Leano.
She explained she already started a Peer Education Programme to address issues such as bullying, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.
Njabulo added this programme is important to equip children with the knowledge to know what to do when a fellow learner needs assistance. He further noted fellow learners are in many cases better aware when another learner is struggling and can then reach out to the relevant person to help that learner, after getting consent.
Leone noted her main goal is to use her position to help other learners and for her is not about the power or the title, but rather the responsibility that comes with it. Since Grade One she has dreamt of becoming a leader for others and has carried her leadership potential with her through the years, both in school and in the world.
Njabulo concluded that his education needs to be transformative to children’s lives and their hope for this position is to impact children and bring change for the better to them.
